It’s not easy to find a nice plant-based dessert in Wellington outside of the frozen section in the supermarkets. So we’ve been to a few restaurants offering vegan desserts and tested them out, noting down the ones we think are worth mentioning. Whether you’re craving ice cream, creme brulee or a cookie sandwich, satisfy your sweet tooth with these divine vegan desserts in Wellington City.

Beach Babylon

This beachside restaurant has a selection of vegan options, especially when it comes to sweet treats!

Beach Babylon is well-known for its dessert fondus, including flavours like dark chocolate, salted caramel and Snickers. With fresh fruit, Oreos or even pieces of chocolate brownie to dip into the melted chocolatey vegan goodness!

As well as this romantic fondu treat, Babylon offers separate dessert options such as sticky date pudding, apple crumble and more. If you want to try them all, you’ll have to start now!

The Botanist

While The Botanist provides a full restaurant menu including brunch, lunch and dinner, you can’t leave without having a taste of one of their desserts! Even better is that as a fully vegetarian venue, all of their desserts are vegan.

This restaurant offers a drool-worthy tiramisu, pairing well with their DELICIOUS dessert cocktails if you need a bit of a kick! They also serve an awesome cheesecake which regularly changes flavours. So if you haven’t been able to locate a good cheesecake since being vegan, go and visit The Botanist ASAP!

The Champagneria

Formerly ‘Mockingbird’, The Champagneria has a 100% plant-based menu offering a wide range of vegetarian and vegan tapas and platters. One of the platters includes a dessert board, which looked (and tasted!) fantastic.

The dessert board is made up of various mini cakes and slices, including dairy-free cheesecake and ice cream!

If you do end up visiting this champagne and wine bar and ordering the dessert platter, make sure you also make a note of the dessert cocktails! Perfect to end the night with.

Dockside

If you’re looking for a dessert with a view, Dockside has got you covered. The restaurant looks out onto the waterfront, so time it right with the sunset and you’ve got a stunning scene while you dine.

Dockside is one of the few fine-dining restaurants in the city with a separate plant-based menu. And the desserts are lush. This is one of the only dairy-free, egg-free crème brulees we’ve managed to come across since being vegan. It’s everything we had dreamed of and more!

Duck Island

After something quick and sweet before lunch, or after dinner? Duck Island is the popular ice cream store on Cuba St offering a whole selection of epic vegan flavours! Open from the morning until late whether it’s rain or shine, pop in for an ice-cream cone with your mates (or date).

Duck Island has a range of vegan ice creams, some of our favourites being the peanut butter cookie dough and the coconut coffee. They even do dairy-free sundaes with a peanut butter magic shell and milkshake floats!

Nolita

We will never stop talking about Nolita. One of our very favourite restaurants in the city, if not all of Aotearoa! We’ve previously written about how epic their brunches and dinners are, but this time we have to mention the desserts.

As an entirely plant-based, vegan Italian restaurant, Nolita manages to make a beautiful tiramisu cheesecake dessert which we like to treat ourselves to…often. This tiramisu has a chocolate cookie-type crumb base. Topped with creamy layers of mousse deliciousness. Seriously good.

They also have a couple of other options such as banoffee calzone and lemon curd cannoli for the next time you need to treat yourself.

The Library

It’s got ambience, it’s got cocktails, and it’s got desserts. What more could you want? The Library is a trendy Wellington cocktail lounge offering tempting desserts alongside your drinks.

The dessert menu is updated periodically, meaning you won’t get bored, especially as they’ll always have one or two delightful vegan options. Sometimes it’s churros, other times it’s sticky date pudding or even a warm apple crumble.

So come in, have a couple of cocktails then a beautiful dessert to soak it up. What’s even better is desserts are 2 for 1 on Tuesdays!

Zelati

Tucked down the Left Bank alley off Cuba St, Zelati is a magical little gelato and sorbet shop run by joyful staff.

Most of their baking is vegan, meaning you can order a cookie sandwich, a brownie a la mode, or even a cinnamon scroll topped with your favourite gelato! They have dairy-free flavours ranging from fruity classics like passionfruit and mango, to more unique flavours such as matcha and banana split.

However, one of the things that makes them special is their reference to their Filipino heritage by way of serving ube-flavoured gelato and purple ube cookies! Totally different and delicious, and absolutely a must-try.
