The Little High Eatery in Christchurch is a hive of activity. Where the smell of all sorts of hot, delicious kai draws hungry people for lunch and dinner in the city. Here at the market live a mix of cuisines and food ranging from wood-fired pizzas, Thai curries, burgers, ramen, and desserts. Most of these businesses cook up a yummy vegan option for those after a plant-based meal. So we’ve put together a list, and here it is!
Bacon Bros
Four whole vegan options. Four! Despite the name, Bacon Bros serves up four epic vegan burgers you’ve got to get your hands on. Whether you’re into vege burgers or fake meats, you’ll leave happy! Our favourites are the Sweet Sweet Clo, layered with a crispy hashbrown, fresh avocado, grilled kumara and coconut bacon (seriously divine). And Big Jim’s Ex-Girlfriend, which is essentially a fried chicken and cheese burger made for vegans! Yum yum yum.
As well as burgers, they’ve got vegan loaded fries – hand cut! – topped with jackfruit, avocado and coconut bacon. Also, deep-fried cauliflower and charred broccoli, if you’re just after a snack at Little High Eatery.
Base Pizza
Wood-fired pizza has got to be the best kind of pizza. Made crispy on the bottom, cheese melted perfectly on the top, and a crisp but fluffy crust, Base Pizza does it right. Their vegan options include your classic Margherita with a dairy-free mozzarella, a vegan pepperoni pizza, a Supreme, and lastly a feta and mushroom pizza. The vegan cheese they use is heaven and somehow manages to melt wonderfully.
But wait… there’s more. VEGAN SHAKES! Chocolate banana, vanilla, oreo, mocha, the list goes on. Made with your choice of coconut or soy milk, grab a shake with your pizza to complete the experience at the Little High Eatery.
Caribe Latin Kitchen
Rice and beans are a vegan’s best friend! If you’re like us, Latin American cuisine is an easy vegan meal, homemade or when eating out. Although rarely will it be accompanied by some kind of vegan or dairy-free queso in restaurants. However, Caribe Kitchen manages it! With vegan versions of black bean quesadillas, veggie arepas and nachos. All of it dripping with cheesy goodness!
Caribe also sells chilled Mexican Jarritos in several colourful flavours like Guava, lime, watermelon, grapefruit and more. Otherwise, they offer a range of margaritas (shaken or frozen!) and cocktails to accompany your meal when you’re eating out at the Little High Eatery.
Eightgrains Dumpling and Bao
If you’re on the hunt for soft, melt-in-your-mouth dumplings, or bao buns you could eat your weight in, then look no further. Eightgrains at Little High Eatery is our knight in shining armour. They serve up some of the most delicious vegan Chinese food in the city centre! The dumplings are steamed or pan-fried and stuffed with mushroom and salted edamame, while the steamed bao is filled with crunchy tempura vege.
There are plenty of vegan options meaning you’ll have to keep coming back to taste it all. A selection includes fried spring rolls, tofu fried rice, wok stir fry, and spicey dan. They even serve vegan apple mango cinnamon rolls if you want to finish off with something sweet! Eek!
Noodle Monk
It’s hard to go wrong with Thai street food, especially when it’s hot, full of flavour, and vegan! Your tastebuds can rely on Noodle Monk whether you’re craving a steaming Thai curry with rice (with options like massamun, Tom Yum and Thai green), or crispy home-made spring rolls and curry puffs.
When ordering a curry you can choose to add tofu (soaks up the flavours beautifully) or keep it simple with a fresh veggie dish. Pair your meal with a nice cold pint of Tiger! Make sure you try Noodle Monk when you’re at Little High Eatery next.
Paleta Bar
A Mexican-style iceblock is the perfect way to end your time at Little High Eatery, whatever the weather is doing! Paleta Bar serves up authentic Paleta (meaning ‘Ice-pop’ in Spanish), with the option to be dipped in dark chocolate (or powdered chilli!) and topped with fresh fruits, Oreos, peanuts, and coconut.
You can choose to have your paleta with sweet and fruity toppings, or savoury toppings like tajin, chamoy, chili and lime. You can even have it turned into a tasty shake with the flavour of your choice. You’ll definitely want to try a paleta if you haven’t already!
Dice and Slice
Slices of cheesy New York-style pizza and deliciously moist cheesecake (chocolate chunk and house-made raspberry flavours!) are not the only greatness provided by Dice and Slice. In fact, they also provide a vibey space and more than 200 board games to entertain the people of Christchurch with!
Head to the board game bar and pizzeria at Little High Eatery for a drink, a slice of pizza, some dessert, and a game of your choice. Perfect for a date night or even just hanging out with your mates.
Sushi Soldier
As sushi lovers, eating at Sushi Soldier is like receiving a big, warm hug. Japanese cuisine is such a comfort, especially when you’re served with a big steaming bowl of ramen! Or a fresh sushi roll filled with teriyaki shiitake mushroom… or even a stir-fry tofu donburi bowl! Also, their vegan bento box is perfect if you want a bit of everything, including vege gyoza, crispy spring rolls, fried tofu and steamed rice.
Sushi Soldier at Little High Eatery has plenty of vegan options, whether you’re after something hot or cold, to take away or eat in. Their vegetable ramen noodles are served with edamame beans, tempura kakiage vegetables, corn and salty seaweed – so good you’ll want to drink the soup!
