Vegan Takeaways Wellington
Trying a new takeaway joint can be risky, so we’ve taken one for the team and ordered some of the best vegan takeaways Wellington has to offer. Burgers, pizzas, noodles and fried food galore. Check out the post for honest reviews and our personal favourite kai.
Lord of the Fries -Vegan Takeaways Wellington
We’ll start with the epitome of fast food in the Wellington vegan community. Lord of the Fries. As a fully plant-based restaurant, LOTF is as close as you can get to a Mcdonald’s quality burger as a vegan. Up to you to decide if that’s a good thing! This place gets a lot of criticism for its quality, but what can you really expect from a cheap fast-food chain? Besides, the staff are always lovely and trying their hardest.
LOTF serves greasy burgers, hot dogs and cheesy loaded fries and gravy (yum) with lots of alternative meat substitutes. Their peanut butter chocolate milkshakes are a must! We reckon if you’re looking for saucy, messy vegan takeaways in Wellington, then this is your best bet.
(Cost: Burgers from $13, hotdogs from $9 and shakes at $8.90)
Located on Cuba St, Wellington.
Chan’s Eatery – Vegan Takeaways Wellington
Chan’s is a small, family-run Malaysian restaurant in Newtown with a separate vegan menu. With options like dumplings, chow mein and fried rice, the flavours are super authentic and the prices don’t make us cringe. Ashley is there at least once a week, her go-to order for takeaways being mapo tofu, spring rolls and roti channai (pictured).
Plus, the portion sizes never let us down. We recommend it to anyone missing the comfort of Asian takeaways after going vegan. If you’re wanting to support local, head down to Chan’s for dumplings made with love!
(Cost: Noodles, rice and soups between $16.90-19.90, sides from $7.50)
Located on Riddiford St, Newtown, Wellington.
Gorilla Burger – Vegan Takeaways Wellington
When you’re craving that classic, greasy burger to go with a nice cold pint, Gorilla Burger is a must. Especially as they are often attached to a brewery! They’ve got two different vegan burgers to choose from, along with other fried side options.
Gabby’s “day off order” is the Virunga burger with a side of their Vegan Jungle fries and a pint of whatever’s on tap! An alternative meat patty that is juicy and delicious, with melted dairy-free cheese and a perfect amount of burger sauce. Sit-in or takeaway, it’s just what you need on a sunny Friday evening.
(Cost: Burgers from $17.90, sides from $7.90)
Located in 4 spots throughout Wellington: Willis and Leeds St in the CBD, Miramar and Rongotai.
Aunty Mena’s Vegetarian Restaurant and Café
Similar Malaysian fusion style to Chan’s, but is fully vegan! Aunty Mena’s has all the good stuff, such as BBQ pork buns, wonton soup and a favourite, curry noodles. Yummy veggie fritters and juicy soya slices all mixed in a heavenly potato curry. The most mouth-watering fried comfort food you can find in the city.
We can guarantee you will not be disappointed with their massive portions and affordable prices. The kind, hard-working staff always keep us coming back for more. Whether it’s takeaways or eating in the restaurant for lunch, when we’re in Wellington we’re here more often than we’d care to admit!
(Cost: Main meals between $16-20.50, entrees eg. BBQ pork buns, wontons, roti etc. around $10)
Located on Cuba St, Wellington.
UNLUCKY – Vegan Takeaways Wellington
Unlucky is one of the newer vegan takeaways in Wellington. Offering the hungry people of Courtenay Place cheesy goodness after a night out on the town! The next-door neighbour and sister restaurant to the non-vegan ‘Lucky Chicken’. Unlucky serves only a 100% plant-based menu.
With a selection of loaded fries and alternative meat burgers, Unlucky is a safe option if you’re ravenous after a couple of drinks. Serving typical Courtenay Place kai, with drippy sauce and crispy fried ‘chicken’ patties, this messy but drool-worthy food is perfect to end a night with.
(Cost: Averagely priced at $17-21 for a burger and $8-14 for sides)
Update: Unlucky has closed down.
Located on Courtenay Place, Wellington.
Currizza
Currizza is a blend of Indian curry and pizza. We know what you might be thinking… What?? Curry pizza? We are here to say yes. Yes, Curry Pizza. Their slogan is Spice on a Slice, and we’d say it’s one of the 7 Wonders of Wellington. We won’t name names, but one of us ordered Currizza at least once a week during her first year at University. But now the smell of it transports her back to the stress of working on assignments, so she tends to stay away now.
Keep in mind that they are not all vegan (however ordering on the website there is a vegan section), so you’ll have to order your vegetarian pizza with vegan mozzarella if you’re not ordering off their site (avoiding the paneer because that’s obviously still cheese!). Pickup or delivery, and in Wellington only. The only thing they’re missing is a dairy-free mango lassi!
(Cost: Pizza between $15-19 each)
Located in Mount Cook and Lower Hutt, Wellington.
Burger Fuel
Burger Fuel is a constant in our lives. She’s always been there, and we hope she always will be. Burger Fuel has two vegan burger options, as well as a few sides (go for the kumara fries). Always made with fresh ingredients like crispy lettuce, chunky avocado, sliced tomatoes and tasty vegetable patties, it’s gourmet compared to places like Lord of the Fries!
They also do really good vegan soy shakes. Caramel is the best but sometimes they do a gingerbread shake around Christmas, which always wins in my books!
(Cost: Vegan burgers from $14.50, sides from $6.30)
Located on Courtenay Place, Wellington
